The Canyon Cathedral is the second installment of The Witches of Tanglewood series by Michelle Rene. Following the events of Manufactured Witches, the book follows Nat, a teenager struggling with his identity and powers that he received when touched by the goddess Nan. The murder of his old nemesis Jack in his holding cell causes a rift among Camille, Vivian, and Nat, causing him to feel more lost than ever. Furthermore, the disappearance of Delphia Frost brings Nat and Camille to The Canyon Cathedral, where Nat delves into Camille's past, learning more about the relationship between Camille, Vivian, and Jack. He discovers the reasons behind Camille's reluctance to use her powers and learns to cope with his own demons. But will that be enough to protect his friends?
Author Michelle Rene enthralls you with a captivating tale of witches and goddesses you don't want to put down. The Canyon Cathedral is filled with magic, providing you with a sense of wonder and awe that readers who love books like Harry Potter will readily appreciate. The narrative is fast-paced, and you never see the twists coming. Michelle Rene masterfully portrays the feelings of alienation and anguish through her characters, making them riveting to read. I especially enjoyed the parallels between Nat and Camille's arcs. Topics such as gender identity and LGBTQ relationships seem thoughtfully portrayed in the book. Despite being a sequel, The Canyon Cathedral also functions seamlessly as a standalone novel. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will recommend it to readers who enjoy young adult fantasy stories.
