The Business of Ambiguity by Debbie Sutherland provides a thorough, well-researched look into how humans face the unknown. From birth until death, each of us is called upon to make decisions without having a full repertoire of factual evidence to help us make a sound choice. How we interpret the information we do have and how we handle the stress of the unknown can and does impact our personal and professional lives. Author Debbie Sutherland combines research and anecdotal evidence to present a pathway for leaders in every industry and advice to follow to best navigate the endless unknowns that exist in our lives, particularly where group dynamics come into play. Her premise that understanding ambiguity and developing an ambiguity mindset will help each reader on their path toward being a great leader is well supported by each chapter.
I appreciated the unique combination approach that author Debbie Sutherland took in her book, The Business of Ambiguity. She combined information from psychology, sociology, and business with strong examples of powerful decision-makers and wide-reaching groups of people to drive home the main points. Every working professional can benefit from the principles within this book. Readers may start out thinking their lives do not have much ambiguity, only to determine, as I did, by the end of the book that ambiguity is pervasive in each of our lives and can either be a huge hindrance or become an asset as we develop our perspective. I enjoyed the tone and the structure of this informative and valuable book. This topic is TED Talk worthy and can immediately begin to set apart truly great leaders who employ the principles of this book from those who do not.
