Li Wei is a little Panda Bear. He hasn’t grown to his full adult size yet. One day, when hungry, he searches and finds some tasty bamboo to eat. Yuan, a brown bear much bigger than Li Wei, challenges Li Wei’s right to be eating the bamboo plants. He scolds Li Wei, calls him names, and makes fun of his size and the way he looks. Li Wei doesn’t want to be a tattle-tale, but he does want to eat. His older sister, Su Ling, finds Li Wei sobbing behind a huge boulder. Su Ling decides to protect her little brother. When she confronts Yuan, she scolds him for being such a bully. Su Ling is bigger than Yuan, but she doesn’t bully Yuan to make her point. Basically, she just tells him to be more respectful.

Bullies are all around us. They’re not just children. Adults are often bullies as well. They use their size, the sound of their voice, or their egotistical belief in their own self-importance to bear down on those who are somehow different. The thing is, we’re all different and we have to learn to accept each of our differences and learn to live with one another. Mary Esparza-Vela’s colorful picture book, The Bullied Panda, is an excellent resource for teaching people, both young and old, the sad facts about bullying. It’s also a charming story that will move the hearts of children and, hopefully, encourage them to be respectful of others, regardless of how they look or how they talk. We have to remember that we are all different and we need reminding now and again to show respect to others at all times.
