When Lily Coltrane joins The Illustrious Minds Literary Society, an extra-curricular club at the university, she never imagines that their promise of a truly unique social experience includes monthly visits to the mysterious Theatre Imaginique at the edge of town, a dark venue that houses the most obscure convoy of carnival performers she has ever laid eyes on. Then there’s Lemarick Novel, the theatre’s enigmatic proprietor, who shows an interest in her.
The Book Of Shade (Shadeborn, Book 1) by K.C. Finn is an intriguing paranormal urban fantasy that fans of the genre will absolutely love. Mythical creatures and the impossible world become real. The premise is solid and the classic good versus evil theme is given a fresh spin. The plot has great unpredictable twists, more than enough to keep readers entertained from start to finish. Boosted by Finn’s narrative style, it didn’t take me long to become immersed in the story. Finn’s writing is witty, compelling and emotional. I found myself chuckling along with some lines, as well as on edge with the suspenseful bits.
The characterization is excellent and doesn’t feel forced. Finn gives Lily as the female lead plenty of room to grow. I also like her roommate Jazzy. Some of Finn’s characters are somewhat off the wall, particularly Lemarick, but what I like about them is that they are all a different kind of oddball – peculiarities that Finn weaves together deftly. Simply put, this is a great start for the series and I look forward to Book 2.
