Flintebetty Flonagan was walking back home in the evening when she saw a poster on the wall. It read 'Booger Hunter's Apprentice Wanted' and the address was for a house that was a mile out of town. Flintebetty set off and she found a cottage in the clearing with purple, violet, and mauve feathers on the roof. An old woman answered her knock and ushered her in. She told Flin Flon that she would show her a Booger Hunter's work instead of telling her about it. The old lady made Flin Flon wear an Officially Pointed Hat and a long gummy cloak and off they went.
The Booger Hunter's Apprentice by Benoit Chartier takes readers on a fantastical adventure along with Flin Flon and the old lady to many weird and odd places where they meet different creatures, some with tentacles, the dragonite realms, a kelpie and her babe covered in kelp, and others. It is a fun way to look at removing the stubborn baby boogers or their lanky nasal fluid. The dark and eerie illustrations by JuanBJuan Oliver add to the weirdness of the plot and bring to life the creatures in the book, making them palpable to readers. I like the author's unconventional approach to the topic and, along with the illustrations, this makes removing baby boogers an adventure and a fun story to use in classrooms and school libraries for reading aloud and storytelling sessions. The topic couldn't have been discussed in a better way than this.
