The Bogota Promise is a work of fiction in the thriller subgenre and is the first installment of the Tom Finnegan series. It is aimed at mature readers and was penned by Mike Klapheke. The book sees Finnegan come out of hiding to face a drug lord who has taken tourists hostage as part of his plan to finance a coup. With no government willing to mount a rescue and Finnegan’s ex-wife amongst the hostages, he must devise a dangerous plan to try to save them. A plan so bold that even if it succeeds, he’ll end up as an international fugitive.
The stakes are quickly established in this exciting thriller and almost immediately raised higher still. Mike Klapheke has an outstanding sense of drama and pacing with a dynamic ebb and flow of tension throughout the novel that never lets its protagonist or reader rest too long between moments of intense action. I found Tom Finnegan to be a fascinating hero for a thriller like this, grounded in reality and facing his demons even as he fights for his life and for those he cares about. The more time I spent with him, the more I wanted to learn and I turned the last page of this novel keen for more installments in the series. The Bogota Promise delivers everything needed for a high-stakes thriller, with a complex web of villains executing a constantly shifting scheme that makes the situation feel alive and never stops pushing the protagonist to be at his best throughout.
