Readers are taken into the African jungle where the Congo River flows in The Blue Crocodile by Sarah Case Mamika. Here they meet a rare crocodile who is blue in color instead of green. Everyone is afraid of the Blue Crocodile and he has no friends. Whatever he does, he is unable to blend in with the rest of the animals in the jungle. He keeps wondering why he does not look like the other crocodiles. Things change when he meets Hippo and they realize that they both have the same problem – everyone is scared of them! They both run into ferocious Lion and find out that he has the same problem they have. Will these three friends finally be able to accept the fact that they are different from the rest of the animals and be happy about it?

The book conveys the messages of self-acceptance, being happy with what one has, being thoughtful, kind, and caring, and just letting your character shine through. The illustrations are charming and appealing to children and will help them understand the story and the messages better. It is an excellent story that can be used for interactive sessions in classrooms and children can enact the parts of the three characters - Blue Crocodile, Lion, and Hippo - as they teach everyone some important life lessons. For children who are different from others, this book will help them accept themselves and be happy about it.
