The palace, accessed only through a dilapidated cemetery, has continued to haunt the inhabitants for ages. Even though youngsters would dare each other to visit the place, no one who has set foot inside has ever come out. When Morlanna Miller decides to unearth the truth behind this legend, she has to face unimaginable obstacles, including a skeptical boss, a vulgar co-worker, and an ancient evil. Will she succeed in her quest? To find out you have to read The Bishop’s Palace, a horror novel by Janet K. Shawgo.
This book is a perfect example of folklore horror, featuring ancient evil, bad omens, occult practices, and sacred talismans. An aura of otherworldliness veiled the infamous palace, closely guarding its secrets. Since people were too afraid to correct an age-old wrong, malevolent forces gradually crept over the entire town. As the plot slowly unraveled, revealing the hidden connections to past occurrences, I could only wait with bated breath to see how everything would pan out. The story depicted how greed could corrupt a soul, luring it to a path of eternal damnation. To fight it, one needs to possess unwavering faith and determination. I loved Morlanna’s strength and self-reliance as an investigative journalist in a male-dominated world. Janet K. Shawgo accurately portrayed the misogynistic attitude of her male co-workers who were intent on demeaning her. However, Morlanna paid them no heed and strived to reach her goal. I recommend The Bishop’s Palace to anyone appreciating a small-town horror story.
