The Beggar’s Miracle by Joy Ross Davis tells the story of a young girl, Bitty Brown, who grows up in an orphanage in Ireland. Traumatised from the age of four, Bitty is unable to speak and the sisters at the orphanage eventually decide no one will ever want her, and tell her so. She is consigned to a life permanently washing the robes of the clergy, a role she finds tiring and hopeless. When she is told she will be working seven days a week, she finally decides life on the streets would be preferable and runs away. An encounter with a beggar and his dog, and the kindness of Pastor Percy, change her life yet again, but this time for the better. With a somewhat supernatural intervention, Bitty escapes death and finally finds the answers to her troubled past.

This is a beautiful story, well written and a delight to read. It is a novella and provides a couple of hours of escapism as the reader follows Bitty on her quest to find true happiness. Happiness is something that Bitty has never experienced, so she does not really know what she is looking for. The characters are developed and endearing – except for the sisters at the orphanage. The descriptions are delightful and visual and this story would make a wonderful short drama. The cover is perfect and really entices the reader to open the book. The author, Joy Ross Davis, has done a very good job of painting an extraordinary picture of life on the streets, of the desolation, the isolation and the despair. An excellent book.

The Beggar’s Miracle by Joy Ross Davis is the story of a nineteen-year-old girl named Bitty Brown, set in Ireland in the mid-1950s. After fifteen years at the Sisters of Mercy Orphanage, Bitty is considered a liability to the orphanage due to her lack of skills, and she runs away from Dublin, preferring a life out on the streets to one spent slaving over washing clothes and cleaning. Bitty finds occasional refuge at the Dungarran Church of Ireland as well as with an old beggar and his large dog, the two of which turn out to be much more than meets the eye. When reports come to light about alleged abuse and financial finagling at the orphanage, investigations begin. One of the people to visit the orphanage is Percy Quinlan, who is the associate pastor of the Dungarran Church of Ireland. He sees the harsh conditions and lack of love at the orphanage and resolves to help the children, just as someone had once helped him.

Joy Ross Davis crafts a beautiful story of love, faith, and miracles in The Beggar’s Miracle. While at first the fragmented nature of the story, with its various perspectives and focuses, may be confusing, everything comes together at the end. This book is filled with a number of characters, all of which entertain and enthrall, leaving you engaged from beginning to end. It is wonderful to watch Bitty blossom from a shy and scared young woman to someone who is both confident and beloved by all. A very nice story.

The Beggar's Miracle by Joy Ross Davis is an uplifting and inspiring novel about eternal hope. Nineteen-year-old Bitty lost her mother at the age of four and was left in the Sisters of Mercy Orphanage. Bitty experienced abuse at the hands of the Sisters and had scars that have left her mute. After two of her friends are killed while in the service of the Sisters, Bitty chose to live in the streets rather than work for them. One frigid night, her cough weakens her so badly that she seeks warmth in the nearby church. The assistant minister finds her there and, not wanting to frighten Bitty off, inconspicuously leaves her a warm wrap. Bitty takes the wrap and returns to the cold night and her cardboard box home. An old, raggedy beggar and an old dog approach Bitty and offer her warm food. Grateful, Bitty shares her cardboard box with them that night. After falling asleep with the dog's head in her lap and the old man beside her, Bitty wakes up in a clean room and a warm bed. A kind stranger is ministering to her ill and frail body. How did she get here? Where did the beggar and old dog go?

The Beggar's Miracle by Joy Ross Davis is a heartwarming story about loss, pain, and regeneration. This amazing story characterizes the warmth and love of human kindness and how love returns to the giver. Each of the characters portrayed in the story has experienced love and loss. None of them ever gave up hope in humanity or their own integrity. Each of their lives has a common thread that is intricately intertwined and comes full circle to the closure of the story. This is a beautifully written book that engenders hope in the spiritual realm as well as the earthly. Although the book isn't realistic, it portrays love in its purest form. This beautiful fiction novel is suitable for anyone who likes clean romances that bask in the mercy and love of light beings.
