The Baby Factory by Donna Walo Clancy is a thought-provoking story that explores human trafficking; it is dark and poignantly written. Meghan Clark and Sarah Tolan have been best friends for as long as they can remember, and it’s been four years since they had a vacation together. On their way, in a backwoods small town, after refilling their gas tank, they get arrested for stealing gas. It’s a false charge, as they are about to learn, for they have been taken by the wrong people and into a place of no return - the Woman’s Monastery Prison, a dingy place where only those who can make babies have the chance to survive. While Sarah seems resigned to her fate, Meghan is determined to save herself and her best friend. Meghan is strong and outspoken and has always been there for Sarah, who is timid and quiet. With help from the spirit of old man Dave, one of the spirits that haunt the monastery, Meghan now knows an escape route beneath the monastery. But does she have what it takes to beat the guards and escape with her friend?
This book explores the black market of human trafficking and presents two compelling characters that readers will enjoy. The crisis point is introduced very early in the narrative, when the two friends get arrested, and from this moment on the suspense grows steadily. The way the relationship between Sarah and Meghan is explored is beautiful and Donna Walo Clancy exhibits a deft handling of plot and character, creating emotions that rub off on the reader and a conflict that moves the story in powerful ways. The narrative is suspenseful, the setting captured in excellent descriptions that allow images to pop up on the pages. Great dialogues, wonderful pacing, and memorable characters. The Baby Factory grabs your attention from the first page and never lets it slip until the engrossing and explosive denouement.
