Part autobiographical and part spiritual writing, The Awakening of Death by David Jones is a no-holds-barred book that uses the author’s experiences and observations to test how much he could stand and how he arrives at the way he views life and its purpose. The earlier portions of this book are about the author’s life that give you a glimpse of understanding what he has been through to arrive at this stage in his life. The earliest memories of his childhood were riddled with pain, violence, and arguing. He addresses the cause of his behavior and what triggered him to make certain choices that may well be described as life lessons. As for the latter part of the book, the word spiritual is used in a lighter sense for beginners to better arrive at the answer to why we are here.
The Awakening of Death is a testament to the simple fact that life can be difficult. David Jones’s experience is so inspiring and encouraging that he also makes me feel good about my own life choices. This is the story of a man who is aware that the world doesn’t owe him anything, and that it is totally up to him to make the choices that will creatively help turn his life around. The autobiographical and spiritual parts of this work merge effectively to reflect Jones’s personal progression, and how his improvement serves as an extension to reach out to you. Finally, it has an open-ended conclusion to remind you that the road ahead will be full of challenges, but these are things you can view as opportunities for discovery and self-change. I recommend this book highly. It will make you walk away with a strong sense of self and purpose.
