“I’m going to collect a few important things for Grandma and put them in this box! This will help her to remember. We can call it Grandma’s memory box.” In The Amazing Zoe and Grandma’s Memory Box by Valene Campbell, little Zoe and her mom visit her grandma who has Alzheimer's disease. She meets the kind and friendly Lilly, who stops by each day and helps Grandma with everything she needs. Grandma is an affectionate person but she forgets Zoe's name and forgets to bake her favorite homemade chocolate chip cookies. Zoe is sad but, during this heartfelt story, she learns to understand Grandma's condition and help her in her own way.
Dementia can change a family's life and bring hard challenges but this third installment of the Amazing Zoe series is a wonderful exploration of understanding and patience when a family member has to deal with it. It emphasizes teaching kids about this difficult disease, the kind of care that is involved, and how a person's memory is affected by it. It is sad when a loved one can't remember important things, but that is how Zoe comes up with a special way to help her grandma: a memory box to help her remember special moments of their family. The characters are lovely and Valene Campbell delivers the story superbly. The approach is direct and informative to help grown-ups explain dementia to the younger generation, with the help of many charming illustrations by Arooba Bilal. Heart-warming and inspiring, The Amazing Zoe and Grandma’s Memory Box is an excellent children's book that helps kids navigate significant change while celebrating love and family.
