The Ale Boy’s Feast by Jeffrey Overstreet is the fourth book in the Auralia Thread series. In this story, the king has disappeared, life seems hopeless and survival depends on the king’s ale boy who embarks on a dangerous journey leading his followers to the hope of a new life. With some help from some unlikely friends, The Ale Boy’s Feast is an adventure, not just for the characters involved, but also for the imagination of the reader.

I have to admit fantasy novels are not always my favorite, but every once in a while, it can be fun to take a journey of the imagination to a place and time created by a creative author. The Ale Boy’s Feast was most certainly an entertaining read; however, this being the fourth book in the series, I felt like I was missing something throughout most of the book. And indeed I was missing something...the first three books in the series. I think if I had the complete background, this book would have been a lot more fun to read.

That being said, I really liked Jeffrey Overstreet’s writing. His characters are fun, and he creates a world that was truly a lot of fun to visit. It was nice to take a break from my usual reading and take a trip with the ale boy and his cast of characters. Fans of Christian fantasy will really like this book, but I would highly recommend reading the other books first. There is just too much back story for the author to catch readers up on, but he does do his best to help readers like me feel less lost.
