There are some pleasures of which one never grows tired...like getting stuck into a new book only to find you can’t put it down until there are no more pages to read. For me, The Alaskan Alibi by Stephen Frost was one of those pleasures. This is a superbly rendered fictional account of trying to find out who really committed a murder 14 years after it took place. When Logan, a law professor, learns that one of his best and longtime friends, Peter, has been charged in the murder of a man who provided a false alibi for a serial killer in Alaska, Logan rushes to Peter’s defense. It’s just not possible his dear friend is guilty, even though one of the serial killer’s victims was Peter’s daughter. But why is Peter so resigned to spending what’s left of his life behind bars? As Logan researches the case in preparation for trial, lots of previously glossed over or hidden information surfaces that hints at other possible murderers but nothing that specifically exonerates Peter. Then strange things start happening: threatening emails; bomb scares; warnings to Logan to back off the investigation. Just what is going on here and who is behind it all?
How fast do we turn the pages till we find out? Very fast. In the meantime, Stephen Frost relieves some of the tension by sharing lovely moments between Logan and his former lawyer girlfriend, Lacey, and giving readers a delightful glimpse into the natural wonders of Alaska and the lifestyle of its inhabitants. Dialogue is plentiful and realistic and moves the plot along quickly. Characters come alive under Frost’s pen: readers feel like they are enjoying good food and repartee with Logan, Lacey, and friends. And some characters, like the beautiful but alcoholic Lola, make you laugh and cry all at once. The Alaskan Alibi is one of the best fiction novels whose story had its factual start “between 1978 and 1983” [when] “over 40 girls vanished from the streets of Anchorage” at the hands of a serial killer, Jack Jansen. I’m always somewhat in awe of authors who can take a piece of history and create an absorbing fictional tale around it. Stephen Frost is one of those authors. Given his own legal experience, I hope this is just one of many more stories he has tucked away for us!
