The Adventures of Henry the Hedgehog: Hiding in the Forest by Dr. Renea Skelton is a children’s illustrated book about friendship and fear. Henry the hedgehog and Olivia the otter, who are friends living in the woods, meet up with Brock the beaver. Brock is busy building a new beaver dam to replace the one ruined by a recent flood. But Brock has issues and fears about moving into a new home. Each page includes interactive questions or facts about the animals in the story. This one deals with the aspects of fear, and how Henry and Olivia help Brock deal with them. The last page of the book provides guidance for parents and teachers for helping children work through their fears.

This is one of several books written by Dr. Skelton that help children with personal issues in a fun way. Brock is representative of children going through changes such as moving and living in a new place and absent old friends. But both Henry and Olivia gently help their friend discover new ways to move through his feelings and communicate. I think this book is excellent. Filled with colorful details and charm, it will wiggle its way into the hearts and minds of kids, while providing valuable life lessons about friendship. At the same time, it gives adults, whether they be teachers, parents, grandparents, or any other type of guardian, a path to follow. A way to express to a child that it’s okay to be afraid. It’s part of life. And it’s also manageable. The Adventures of Henry the Hedgehog: Hiding in the Forest by Dr. Renea Skelton comes highly recommended.
