The Adventures of Bentley Hippo: Inspiring Children to Share is an animal adventure picture book for children written by Argyro Graphy. Bentley was just a little bit different from the other hippos in his neighborhood. He was bigger than them for one thing, and he walked on two legs, not four. He also liked to be friends with the monkeys, even though they liked to throw bananas at the hippos. They threw bananas at Bentley as well, at least one particularly obnoxious monkey named Jaxon did. Jaxon claimed that throwing the bananas, which even hit Bentley on the head or made him trip, was sharing. Bentley knew better, however; sharing was definitely not what Jaxon thought it was. Then one afternoon after school, a huge storm hit, and Jaxon was terrified. Bentley’s mom saw the two of them outside and called them in. Once inside, Jaxon learned about sharing in the nicest possible way. It was a lesson he would never forget.
The Adventures of Bentley Hippo: Inspiring Children to Share introduces the author’s admittedly different young hippo and shares Bentley’s interactions with a mischievous monkey, who really doesn’t get the spirit of sharing and generosity. Watching as Bentley and his mom exhibit their brand of sharing is illuminating and powerful. Graphy’s illustrations are boldly colored and bring Bentley, his classmates, and his mom to life most brilliantly. Kids can sometimes have issues with concepts like sharing so this story goes a long way towards highlighting how sharing benefits both the giver and the receiver. It’s an excellent choice for story hour and can work as a springboard for discussions about sharing and generosity. The Adventures of Bentley Hippo: Inspiring Children to Share is highly recommended.
