The beach is a beautiful sanctuary for people who want to get away from the rush of the city. But, the beach is also home to a lot of wildlife. Starfish, Crab, and Seagull live on the beach, but they are saddened by all the trash that is littering their home. They can’t live on a messy beach. Would you want to live in a messy home? Full of garbage and other people’s trash? Starfish, Crab, and Seagull band together to spread the message: “Don’t do that? That’s our home,/ You’re just not being green./ Use a bin, or take it home,/ Keep the beaches clean." They catch people dropping plastic, bottles, tins, straws and so much more. They even catch a group digging in the sand to bury their trash! These people need to learn to respect others’ homes. We all need that reminder.
Jude Lennon’s picture book story, That’s Our Home, is a clever way to teach young readers about recycling and caring for our planet. Using three sea/ beach creatures as the main characters, she develops a plot where the creatures narrate the dilemma that needs to be addressed. The story is told in rhyming verse and the colorful illustrations are vivid and clearly emphasize the points being made. There are some bullet sidebars throughout, asking young readers to think up alternate ways to avoid bringing potential garbage to the beach, like “What else could you wrap your sandwiches in apart from cling film?” At the end of the book, the author has provided a list of tips to help young readers (and older ones, too), learn more efficient ways to reduce, reuse and recycle, all to do our part to save the planet.
