In 9 AD a battle that shaped the world was fought in the Teutoburg Forest.  The Roman Empire planned to rule the world.  They built roads and bridges as they march across the world.  A battle took place deep in the Teutoburg Forest between the Empires legions and a small group of Germanic barbarians.  History has never proved how the Germanics won that battle effectively stopping the spread of the Empire.

John L. Rothdiener combines history and fiction to create an answer to how the barbarians won the battle.  He begins his story in 2009.  Terrorist have taken hostages in a house in the Teutoburg Forest.  A Terrorist Assault Team was ordered to rescue the hostages and find the dirty bomb thought to be in the house.  The bomb was activated and the TAT and hostages take shelter behind rocks and trees.  The explosion set off a chain of events that changes the world.

It is difficult to review this book without giving away the plot.  Rothdeiner is a master of characterization.  Each character had his/her own personality.  The author does not rely on vulgar language to carry this book.  The TAT never speaks a foul word.  Rothdeiner gives dignity and respect to the soldiers.  This is the debut novel of John L. Rothdiener. This plot is excellent movie fodder.  I look forward to more books by him.

This is a well written novel concerning a little known historic event that took place 2000 years ago. The author skillfully blends science fiction with reality and comes up with a winner. 20,000 Roman soldiers entered this forest to do batlle with 1000 ill-trained warriors and none of the Roman soldiers came out alive. The author uses battle scenes that are realistic but not too gory. The ending is quite well thought out as the author lets you know what happened to the people who survived this epic battle. This was a great Historical Fiction. I think what I appreciated most was that the character of the author was evident throughout the book. It was really refreshing to read and not have to blush at the language or the situations they faced.
It definitely a book I can recommend for the whole family.

A well written account of a battle few people are aware even happened. Mr. Rothdiener has brought two worlds together, the today as we know it and the 1st century. Each character comes alive as the details unfold. I couldn't put it down until the last page was finished. I hope the author will write a sequal to this book and let the characters live on. A must read for everyone who loves history and mystery.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. An interesting twist on a historic event often overlooked, it provides a good balance of dialogue, action, and humor which kept my attention.
