Ten Seconds by Lucian Lupescu attempts to map a human life using a sequence of very short or ‘flash fiction’ vignettes. The ten stories open with a fetus-eye view of birth, followed by a childhood in a troubled home, and a longer piece describing a young man’s online gaming experiences, where the author interweaves aspects of his real life into the game. The sequence does not follow one individual, but a disparate collection of characters in advancing age groups, providing brief glimpses of their daily lives. The collection includes intimate moments as a couple makes love while failing miserably to understand each other’s needs, a sad look at a child losing a treasured pet, a simple bus journey, and culminates in the last thoughts of a woman undergoing multiple surgical procedures.
Ten Seconds is a short but challenging book and author Lucian Lupescu has set himself a daunting task. In starting the book, I had expected the ten stories that it contains to follow the life of one individual but found the brief flash fiction pieces to cover a wide range of characters and subjects. In this respect I feel that the author may have missed the mark, creating an eclectic, unrelated mix of tales that could simply be considered a collection of short stories. Nevertheless, I found the book interesting and I admire Mr. Lupescu’s attempt on such a difficult theme. It would be interesting, using the same technique, to see the theme narrowed to a single life.
