Ten Little Matryoshka Dolls by Akina Mirza is a picture book written by Akina Mirza. This is a fun learning tool for toddlers. The book begins with a single wooden nesting matryoshka bear sitting on a shelf. The bear pops open to reveal a deer, continuing from there with a “Pop!” on each page as the nesting dolls make their own appearance on the shelf. Counting from one to ten, the book brings forward a boar, a wolf, a bobcat, a fox, a skunk, a rabbit, an owl, and a squirrel. In addition to teaching numbers and identifying animals, Mirza also has each animal descending by the scale of their size, beginning with the largest in the bunch and ending with the smallest.
Ten Little Matryoshka Dolls is a sweet way to assist in teaching young children to count to ten. There is a theme of inclusivity that parents will appreciate (even if their little ones are too young to understand right away), with the animals living harmoniously all together on the shelf despite their differences. I liked that the illustrations, which are also created by Akina Mirza, are hand-drawn and colored with pencil with a childlike flair that children will be able to relate to. The youngest little guy in my living room (a stout toddler of 18 months) enjoyed pointing to the animals and he squealed with delight when he saw the bobcat. Overall, this is a good little book to add to a toddler, nursery school, or daycare collection.
