Ten Days by John Sheppard is a book with a lot of twists. Kirkmont is in chaos. Some people are trying to hang onto hope. Others do not see the tomorrow and are taking measures into their own hands. In this current time of despair, the “Option” has been the light at the end of the tunnel for many people. Carl Whitman is a renowned oncologist. Married to Jackie, they both have three children together - Andrew, Megan and Kelly. Their relationship has survived the test of time and nowadays they are closer than ever before to each other. Even though his family is his priority, Dr. Whitman holds a strong professional loyalty that might not be good for their plans. Samantha Ann Carrolton-Logan is a 24-year-old widow and an archivist at the National Museum of History and Art. She lost her husband, Lt. Chad Logan, during an ambush while he was defending his city. Sam, as she is known, is left fending for herself. While fighting for her survival, she has made some crucial discoveries that could hold the answers to many questions. Stephen Newhouse is a retired military officer. His strong sense of duty to his nation and his patriotism make him take the lead in the war against the Enemy. Will Kirkmont succeed against the Enemy offensive? Will the UN sign a treaty? In times like this, trust is the doubtful alternative.
Ten Days by John Sheppard is certainly an intriguing novel. I was surprised by the twists and turns in the plot. The characters are solid and their parallel stories are recounted in the course of ten excruciating days. The tale of their lives is compelling, and I couldn’t help but side with some of them. At the same time, the more I read, the more curious I became to learn who held the key to their desperate answers. What I liked about this book is that gives a contemporary account of historical facts with a hint of biblical events. Different to many stories, this one has an unexpected ending and makes me wonder what’s next. I look forward to the sequel, and I am sure that the fans of this genre will do so as well.
