Teens, Take Flight: On the Pathway to Become Full-Fledged Adults by Luna Rugova comprises a huge amount of practical advice for teenagers from a very personal perspective. It has an introduction aimed at adults and a foreword for teenage readers. The rest of the book is divided into three parts. The Teenage Awakening covers the basics for those who have, or soon will be, thirteen. Teenage Stress addresses the problems of being a teenager. The Teen Growing Up moves on, in the main, to the late teens and the college years, and how to decide what the young reader wants to do with his or her life.
Luna Rugova has a sense of humour that makes Teens, Take Flight very easy to read. That said, she does tackle issues of very real concern to teenagers head-on. Again and again she comes back to the importance of communication, or the lack of it, with parents, siblings, friends, and teachers. Teenagers could learn a lot from Ms Rugova, but that is probably the best piece of advice of all - to talk, and to build mutual trust. She emphasises that young people are under attack; however protected they are the media will invade their lives and it is up to them to reject the worst of it - violence, inappropriate sexual activity, drugs, and pornography. On the physical aspects, she talks bluntly about bodily development and changes. Mentally, she deals with stress, friendship, coping with bullies and avoiding becoming a bully, and the stages of girl/boy relationships from “hanging out” to dating. This is a very personal view of teenagers and their worries that I found comprehensive, understandable and helpful. Ms Rugova comes over as a friend.
