Teddy and the Mighty Yolo by Tina Haydamacha is a children's adventure story with a serious message. Climate change has brought powerful storms to Mariner Harbor and, over the years, Shirley Seaport has become eroded and weak. Now there’s a new one heading her way, Hurricane Yolo, and it’s the biggest one yet. Molly the Kingfisher has come to visit and when she hears of Shirley’s plight, she seeks out Sammy Seaport, Shirley’s best friend, as he welcomes an environmental activist on board a luxury liner. Yolo is causing destruction as it heads for Shirley but Teddy, the smallest tugboat in the harbor, decides to help save her. Together with his tugboat friends, they form a line to protect her but is the storm too powerful? What happens next could be the difference between survival and destruction. The tugboats face the vicious storm but is it enough to save Shirley?
Teddy and the Mighty Yolo by Tina Haydamacha tells the story of the havoc climate change is wreaking upon our planet, with storms getting more and more vicious every year. The plot moves fast and it definitely has an important message for the future, one that kids need to learn about as this planet is their future. The characters are well-developed and although many of them are not human, they feel human and kids will be able to picture them as they read. It is a well-written story and should maybe be included as part of the reading curriculum and schools to educate kids on climate change, how it affects us all, and what we can do about it.
