Shana Bailey has done an incredible job with her cookbook titled Taste and See, a collection of delicious recipes from family and friends. This book is so much more than just a cookbook; it is a work from the heart and a way to preserve the love of cooking that has always been a part of her and her family. Shana begins with explaining why and how she got going on this project and then she dives into sharing the recipes, beginning with her Mema's recipes. Each chapter begins with an introduction about the person whose recipes are being shared. Then the recipes and Shana's memories and tips are included alongside them. There is a huge variety of recipes shared, ones that are very similar to ones that have been passed down through my family and ones that are more unusual. There is an index to complete this book, making it easy to find a certain recipe.
What I loved the most about Shana Bailey's Taste and See are the personal touches throughout. This includes photographs that are well labeled, but my most favorite part is the handwritten notes that are included from her Mema's books. This brings back memories of being at my grandmother's house and seeing her well-used and worn recipe cards sitting out on the kitchen counter as she would be in the midst of baking her molasses cookies or deciding what kind of rolls she was going to make for Sunday dinner with the whole family. I absolutely love this book as it is a way that Shana is helping to preserve her family's memories and recipes and yet she is sharing it with anyone who wishes to take a peek into her world, her kitchen, and create memories of their own while using these well-loved recipes.
