In Talking with Jesus: Break Free of Expectations & Get Real with Jesus in Prayer, Heather Hart and Valerie Riese provide much-needed help for those struggling with prayer. The authors confess their guilt for not praying like the passionate prayer warriors they thought God expected them to be. In time, they realized their need to be set free from their self-imposed prayer prisons - a place where many other well-intentioned Christians lock themselves. The key to unlocking the prison doors to enjoy the freedom of simply talking with Jesus came with the realization that Jesus made them. Together, Heather and Valerie share ways they tried and failed to grow in their prayer life, continuing with their breakthrough moments from the lessons learned. They share an important first step in helping readers understand the need to just be real. While “God remains the same,” it is the way we pray that changes. Just as the seasons change, so too we go through different seasons of life, which affect how we pray.
Talking with Jesus is written as a conversation in which both Heather Hart and Valerie Riese take turns sharing their stories. Their voices helped engage me as a reader and connect with them. I found chapter three “Praying Through Distractions” most helpful because I suffer from prayer ADHD. No sooner do I begin to pray, than a list of things needing to be done fills my mind. I’m grateful for their encouragement to grab hold of your distractions and make them part of your prayer time. We all need to be reminded that the enemy will try to use distractions to keep us from praying. Rather than becoming frustrated, just “pray about it.” You will find Heather and Valerie’s short conversation on prayer encouraging. If you have struggled with prayer, they will help you begin anew. While their target audience is women, I think even men can learn from the experiences they share. All of us need to spend a little more time talking with Jesus.
