Talk to the Hoof: A Kallie Collins Cozy Mystery, Book 2 is a sleuth murder mystery novel written by Lisa Shay. Kallie and her two best friends, Gracie and Sam, had had enough of murder investigations. Granted they did all love a mystery, but the last one came with repercussions that hit a little too close to home. Sleuthing was the last thing on their minds when Gracie called Kallie with the invitation for an afternoon’s horseback ride with Sam and her new love interest, Mike. Kallie’s gift for communicating with animals held her in good stead as a vet and had been instrumental in her assisting the police with an investigation, but she was at the stables for a ride, nothing more. That was until she met Ravi, a bay mare whose troubled eyes had immediately drawn her attention. The resulting vision of a terrified woman running desperately from a shadowy figure whose voice was filled with rage was an unforgettable one. When she told her friends about it, they were dismayed at the thought of another investigation but adamant that she let her contact at the police department know something was up.
Lisa Shay’s Talk to the Hoof is a marvelous romp that will especially appeal to animal lovers as Kallie’s gift for communicating with furry companions is a major focus of the story. While this is the second book in her Kallie Collins Cozy Mystery series, the author provides sufficient background information for it to be enjoyed as a standalone, while not giving out spoilers for those who will want to backtrack to Book 1. Her characters are finely honed and seeing Kallie and her friends work as a team is grand fun. Shay provides plenty of thought-provoking moments and red herrings for armchair sleuths to mull over as they read her book. Talk to the Hoof is well-written and fast-paced, and well worth checking out. It’s most highly recommended.
