“I have been writing stories for as long as I can remember but I didn’t get down to it seriously until I retired to Spain. Some of these stories were written years ago, many were written specifically for a local magazine, Streetwise, and some for competitions. If they have any theme in common it is speculation. Most of these stories begin with asking the question, ‘What if?’” Take One at Bedtime by Jenny Twist is an eclectic collection of short stories that combines the elements of alternate universe, revenge, romance and much more. A betrayal makes a humble woman lose her self-control in What am I Going to do About Alice? - the first story in the anthology. The intriguing ending deftly beckons the reader to draw their own conclusion.
The Apple Tree is one of my favorites, where a man gets a second chance to be with his soulmate again in an alternate world. Antonio’s Grandmother is a funny tale about an unbelievably grumpy matriarch and how she finally lets her guard down and shocks her family and friends. Horror fans will definitely enjoy Jack Trevellyn and Victim of Fortune. All in all, the narrative is engaging where each story has its own appeal with well-developed characters, including thought-provoking concepts and plots. Some can definitely be considered for a novel and I appreciated that Twist explains more about the stories at the end. This collection is truly an enjoyable read, and readers can certainly take on more than one story at bedtime.
