Switzerland To Alaska: Just to Die by Kris Williams is an inspiring story about self-discovery; as the sub-title says, "One man's journey of self-discovery in the Alaskan wilderness." It is based on the true life events of artist and wanderer Ruedi Glauser, a natural born explorer and an inquisitive soul. In the first few chapters, we are immersed in his early life. Readers will soon come to meet the curious young Ruedi as his father teaches him how to traverse glaciers. His father tells him how to listen and adapt with every step, a double entendre; advice for life and survival. As Ruedi grows up he enlists in the Swiss Army, where he learns how to use a gun and how drastically different it is when shooting a cardboard target as opposed to taking a life.
Years later Ruedi’s sister invites him on a trip to Canada where he discovers that his hunger for adventure is suddenly reawakened. “They were calling me to return to the wilderness. Why? What had I lost there? What did I need to find?” Ruedi asks himself questions many of us find ourselves often wondering. In Switzerland to Alaska: Just to Die by Kris Williams, these questions are answered for Ruedi and his friend, Tobias. Kris Williams does a very great job of adding vivid imagery to Ruedi’s story. Her aptitude as a writer is embedded in this story as she clearly translates for readers the inward and outward journey which Ruedi embarks upon. I recommend this book to anyone seeking deeper meaning in life, to anyone with an inquisitive soul, and to any lone wanderers looking for adventure.
