When I was young, we used to play a party game of telling a story using as many types of candies as possible. Jennifer Morhaime uses this premise for her children's book Sweet Halloween. Mr. and Mrs. Goodbar plan to go out for the evening and hire a babysitter for their three children. It’s Halloween, and the children dress as The Three Musketeers. After dinner and a movie, the babysitter settles in to read a storybook to the youngsters. The cute storyline will enthrall your children. They will eagerly want to know what happens next. Even aliens get in on the fun!
After reading this book, I wondered if the Goodbars lived in a Gingerbread House. The stars of this book are the many types of candy one might receive as one goes Trick-or-Treating. As you read the story, have your child count the different kinds of candy mentioned. Then, discuss which sweets your child likes the best and why. Izzy B does a wonderful job illustrating this story. This book will provide a fun-filled evening with your children. Using candy names is a sweet way to write a story. While using some candies is a stretch, most of the story flows remarkably well. This little book mentions almost every type of candy, including candy bars. Your child will delight in thinking about all the sweets and how they combine to tell the story. This is a fun little book you will enjoy reading to and with your youngsters.
