Dread in the Dark is a book in the Little Fears Series by Tuula Pere. Many things have changed since Elliot's baby sister's arrival. Many relatives have visited and gushed over her, and Elliot has been moved to a bedroom further away from his parents' room. Other than choosing new curtains and leaving blocks on the floor, Elliot doesn't really like his new room. When he lies down at night, he hears growling and rattling from under his bed, frightening him until he yells for his parents. His dad listens for the sounds but hears nothing. He leaves Elliot's room, but the clatter resumes until Elliot is terrified. His fears are very real for him, but there may be a reasonable explanation behind the unexplained noises.

Almost everyone has experienced a fear that gripped them when the lights were turned out, and many people have heard noises of unknown origin. Tuula Pere relates to a child's terror and presents it to her audience in a non-threatening way, showing that when a child's routine is altered, normal occurrences can seem frightening. After reading this book, children may feel more confident about the sounds they hear in the dark or be more likely to share their feelings with caregivers. Catty Flores's unique illustrations show unsaid truths, like a newborn father's tired eyes and a child's panic. If you know children who are afraid of staying in their bedroom in the dark, Dread in the Dark is the perfect story for them.
