Survival: Essential Spiritual Habits (Childlike Faith Series) by Pastor Philip Hahn is a very readable, logical, and scripture-based presentation on how Christians can strengthen their spiritual lives. The author, a second-generation children’s pastor, develops a “toolkit” using the analogy between what we need for our physical survival (water, food, fire, and shelter), and what we need for our spiritual health (prayer, Bible study, worship, and church or community). “These are not salvation issues,” he makes clear. “They are survival issues. For the Christian believer who has been born again and started a new life following Jesus, they didn’t have to do anything to obtain the forgiveness of their sins, but there are some essentials they will need in order to continue living that life in a growing and healthy way.”
In Survival, Pastor Hahn refocuses the reader on the simple message of Christian faith. “We have nothing to fear if society collapses or disaster strikes,” he writes. “We are citizens of another kingdom. The worst thing that can happen is death. You can’t scare me with the threat of heaven. There’s nothing to fear in the physical realm. But in the spiritual realm, eternity is at stake and God has provided for our survival.” I like the overall tone of the book and the “survival” approach, which is as applicable today as it was in the early church. Pastor Hahn’s style is crisp, clean, thoughtful, and engaging. This is a perfect book for either self-study, group study, or gifting. And, although written for the Christian audience, the “toolbox” is useful to people of any faith who also struggle to keep strong spiritual lives in a world filled with stress, fear, and distractions.
