Surrender is set in the future when climate conditions are dire, and people have to live in climate-controlled buildings. Kat Keeper was active in the world of fundraising and data before she joined the resistance. Not knowing any better, she was funding a programmer's prototype of an AI with a human personality to reconnect to her diseased husband. Now that she does, she hopes to end the disturbing reality her former collaborator and close confidant is bringing about. Besides fake skies and temperature control, thoughts are gathered without consent. Do Kat and her fellow resistance sisters have what it takes to fight the machine and its controllers? Lee Schneider's Surrender centers on tech entrepreneurs, hopeless romantics, and a rebellious group in a dystopian future.
The future, present, and past in Lee Schneider's nonlinear plot are woven together deftly—creating a constantly fresh and unpredictable story that leaves you craving the thread that connects it all. The book rewards the reader handsomely with a gradually converging plot, allowing a deep understanding of its characters. Additionally, seeing that Kat could recreate and communicate with a computerized version of her dead husband stretched my imagination regarding AI's potential. Ultimately, the book showed me the dystopian side of today's social media and AI and how worse things could get with unbridled technology usage. I enjoyed Surrender so much that I wished it were in a series with at least ten books. I can't get enough of its creative futuristic world. Nonetheless, I'll wait eagerly for Book Two. A must-read for fans of futuristic, dystopian sci-fi!
