Super Max has returned in a new adventure. In Super Max’s Hero Surprise by Heather E. Robyn, Max and her classmates are attending a school assembly. Awards are being handed out for attendance and good grades when suddenly all eyes turn to Max. Max decides it is time to become Super Max and she puts on her superhero mask. When she looks up, she can’t believe her eyes. Standing in front of her is her father who has been deployed. She and her father reunite, with the cheers of her classmates in the background. Max’s dad notices her mask. Max tells him that she pulls it out whenever she needs to channel her inner strength and be like her dad.
Super Max’s Hero Surprise will be welcomed by all military families with members who are deployed. I love the special rituals that she and her dad decide on to keep them connected while he is deployed. These rituals could be used by any parent and child that are separated. The illustrations by Zoe Mellors are outstanding. She has depicted a diverse group of classmates. Max is captivating with her expressive green eyes. As a librarian, it’s so helpful to have books that reflect all kids' lives. Super Max’s Hero Surprise shines a light on the sacrifices that military families make so that we all can be safe. Heather Robyn has created a spunky character in Max that kids will love. Super Max’s Hero Surprise is a marvelous tribute to our military families.
