Patrick E. Craig's 3 X 3, the third Porch Swing Mystery, is for fans of mystery, crime, intrigue, drama, and detective novels. Detective Gary Linden receives a strange letter declaring someone's horrible intention to murder three women. Soon, three women are found brutally killed in Wooster, Ohio. The murderer leaves a mysterious sign on the bodies. Lieutenant Elbert Wainwright leads the investigation. A Vietnam War veteran named Steven Lambright, with severe memory loss, becomes a suspect. His mother, an Amish woman, begs Lieutenant Wainwright to look deeper into the case. Known as "the Amish Miss Marple," Jenny Hershberger and the retired sheriff, Bobby Halverson, must help the police stop the serial killer and shed light on the sinister events that took place in the Amish community decades ago.

In 3 X 3, Patrick E. Craig offers a horrifying yet captivating study of a serial killer's mind and motives. The author confidently combines a psychological thriller with a cozy mystery and adds a good dose of suspense to this exciting mix. Jenny Hershberger is the most unusual amateur sleuth, winning hearts with her courage, compassion, and ability to think outside the box. Bobby Halverson has a razor-sharp mind and an iron hand when catching criminals. Their team seems invincible, and their backstories reveal two incredibly complex characters worth exploring and admiring. The solid plotline has many staggering twists and turns, and the stirring outcome leaves readers open-mouthed. Craig writes about the Amish, their beliefs, and their way of life with tremendous respect. Readers who want to learn more about these hardworking people will appreciate this book.

Three arbitrary killings have occurred in the small town of Wooster, Ohio. Each killing is marked with the killer's bloody signature. Call it his calling card, if you will. These murders send the entire town into a state of shock. Lieutenant Elbert Wainwright and his men are in hot pursuit of their suspect. They believe the perpetrator of these ghastly murders is Steven Lambright, a mentally disabled war veteran. At the same time, Jenny Hershberger, an aging Amish woman, moves back into her old home in Apple Creek, Ohio. Elbert recruits Jenny and her friend, Bobby Halverson, to assist with the case. Both are highly qualified for the job. Jenny is very intuitive, and Bobby is a retired sheriff with military skills. Jenny and Bobby's investigation reveals that the case is more complex than initially presumed. The answers are buried in the past. But the eyes of a vengeful killer are aimed at Jenny. Patrick E. Craig's 3 X 3 begins with Det. Gary Linden and Lt. Elbert Wainwright investigating a series of murders in which the killer leaves a cryptic "3 X 3" signature. The victims, Anna Myerson, Liz Ingersoll, and Missy Berringer, are all found bound, strangled, and staged similarly. Evidence points to Steven Lambright, a former Amish and Vietnam veteran with PTSD and amnesia. Despite his pacifist vow after the war, DNA, tire tracks, and other evidence lead to his arrest. With connections to the Amish community, Jenny Hershberger and Bobby Halverson are brought in. As they dig into Lambright and the victims' backgrounds, they uncover a shared traumatic history and systemic oversights in the investigation, especially once they discover the mysterious deaths of another Amish couple and a symbol associated with a secret society.

In 3 X 3, Patrick E. Craig gives readers a mystery with a unique angle and a lot of surprises. Femicide mysteries feel extremely relevant right now and Craig does well by linking it with a closed community. The murders are sadistic and it's tough to pair that with Lambright, who is dragged through a trial. This might be pretty brazen gambling on reader emotion on Craig's part, but it forces Jenny's work to surge forward. I loved the settings and the Amish details throughout the story. What is uncovered is shocking and readers are taken back to heartbreaking stories of youth, some true ingenuity on the part of a community member, and hikes through the woods where horrible secrets lurk in caverns and hideaways. The writing is tight and Craig's thoughtful attention to character motivation is exceptional, making this a solid read for suspense and mystery lovers.
