Sunny Flower and his Fairy Good Friend is a children’s book about bullying, written by Martha Reed and illustrated by Gail Maguire. As a tiny sprout, Sunny awakens to the warmth of the sun. Above him, large flowers frown and taunt him, calling him a possible weed or maybe bird excrement. The bullying of the other flowers is constant, becoming almost unbearable until Fairy Good Friend, a dragonfly fairy, also wakes from the commotion. Gently, she greets the tiny flower with a smile. Over the weeks, the fairy tells Sunny about the remarkable colors and beautiful flora and fauna which surround them in the world. Before he realizes it, Sunny has outgrown all of the other flowers as his face basks in the warm sun.
I have to say that Sunny Flower and his Fairy Good Friend is definitely one of the more feel-good books that I have ever read, whether for children or any age group. Grasping the concept of bullying in a child’s environment, where the child feels so small and alone, all it took was one friend to make the child feel less of a target and more accepted. Martha Reed has done a wonderful job in showing how something so small can grow into the most remarkable and breathtaking thing, thanks to the beautiful illustrations of Gail Maguire. What I enjoyed the most about this book is that the former bully victim did not let his ego grow as his height increased, but rather he smiled as he looked down at those who had bullied him – for he had become strong and resilient due to that one good friend who had stood by him throughout. Not only did I enjoy Sunny Flower and his Fairy Good Friend, but I would most definitely recommend it to readers aged 7-12, so that they can see that there is more to this world than the bullies, and that some day they will also wake with a smile, having survived regardless of them, rather than instead of them.
