Sweet and bittersweet, those are the words I’d use to describe Summer Unbroken by Amy Spade. Spade’s novel focuses on Claire, a young woman who hasn’t had an easy life, but is making the best of her current situation and who does have the love and support of a few great friends and her sister Libby. Through one of her classes, she meets Jake, a soldier-student. Their romance begins, first with joy, but then ever increasingly with tension and worry as Claire contemplates losing Jake to his commitment to the military, even in a time of war. And when Claire encounters a very dramatic and traumatic event in her young life, she has to figure out if she can trust Jake with the truth.
Amy Spade’s writing style fulfills what I call the “three E’s:” easy, entertaining and engrossing. I thoroughly enjoyed Summer Unbroken, and was able to finish the book in one sitting. The narrative moved along quickly, the conversations between characters felt real, and I began to feel like I was participating in a conversation with friends. I think that Spade’s work would appeal to any lover of romance, but especially to the younger reader who enjoys a story about a main character close to their own age. The trials and tribulations of Claire as she navigates through young love will have you rooting for her and hoping for the best. If you are looking for a sweet, sensitive romance, with an ending that will pull at your heart strings, then Summer Unbroken is the book for you!
