If you enjoy action-packed military science fiction thrillers, Suborbital: This is the Future of War by FX Holden is for you. Zoom ahead to the 2030s. The world is transitioning from fossil fuels to renewables. Oil and gas prices are collapsing as OPEC countries try to sell their reserves before the demand dries up. Owing to several factors, the Russian economy is in a death spiral. Only a steep rise in oil prices can save it. Russia threatens Saudi Arabia to cut production or have it cut for them. They refuse. Simultaneously, Russia has developed a secret space-based weapon. When Saudi Arabia’s main oil production facility is obliterated by what is initially reported as a meteor shower, the US and Britain mount a counterattack. Space war is on.
In Suborbital, FX Holden continues his exciting Future of War series. If you’re a Holden fan, you won’t be disappointed. If you’ve never read Holden, be prepared to strap in and hold on for the ride of your life. There are three things that I really enjoy about Holden’s style and they are as strong in Suborbital as in the previous books in the series. One, he explains the weaponry in understandable terms that make the strategy and tactics meaningful. Two, he develops an impressive diversity of characters and features women in strong roles of leadership, ability, and courage. Three, he puts it all together in fast-paced scenes that follow a well-defined plot with a few harrowing twists and surprises along the way. A book you won’t want to put down.
