Stuck in the Doldrums: A Lesson in Sharing by Carole P. Roman is the third book in the Captain No Beard stories. Captain No Beard and his crew are marooned on a desert island. They are stuck as there is no wind to fill the sails of the ship to get it moving. Hallie is content with the idea of playing on the beach. Linus and Fribbet are busy building a sandcastle and they are not happy with Captain No Beard rearranging the sand and messing it up. Captain No Beard is unhappy with the attitude of the crew and goes back to the ship. He realizes he needs his crew. What happens on the ship that makes Captain No Beard call out to his crew for help?
The story is entertaining, like the previous two books, and the message conveyed is an insightful one that is applicable to everyone: ‘Being in charge does not mean you know everything. A leader or a captain must consider the feelings of everyone who is working with him and under him. Or else nobody will want to be part of his team.’ It is a good bedtime storybook and the message makes it a suitable book for classroom read aloud sessions. The author does an excellent job in conveying good messages to young readers through the books in this series. I cannot wait to read Volume 4 to learn what Captain No Beard and his crew are up to? What about you?
