Stopping The Planes: Story One: 1988 by Tyler Barrus is about Drake, a young boy with a passion for flying, who is also a bit of a nerd. When Drake stumbles upon an MP3 player, he thinks he has found something he can tinker with and re-sell, but when he tries, he is sent through time; not just anywhere in time, but to airports where flight disasters of the past occurred. His goal becomes an extraordinary journey to save people from disasters in the air, preventing the tragic loss of life. His first mission, after discovering what the device can do, is to prevent a bomb from going off on a 1988 Pan Am flight; can he do it?
Tyler Barrus is a very talented young writer. His first book, Stopping the Planes, is an adventure in time and air travel. Told in the first person narrative from Drake’s point of view, the plot follows his attempts to save a plane from destruction. The tension builds as time runs out, and Drake discovers that not only is someone involved in the plot working inside the plane but there isn’t sufficient time to defuse the bomb before it takes down the plane. Although most of the story is narrated as Drake shares his adventure, there is more dialogue toward the end when he’s communicating with his grandmother. This is an engaging and exciting story that will capture young readers’ attention to the very end. Well done, Tyler; please keep writing.
