Stillness of Time is a work of young adult fiction by author J.M. Buckler, and the sequel to the highly rated Seeker of Time novel. In this continuation of high school student Elara Dunlin’s story, the truth is out about her destiny and she now has to face the consequences and those who would seek to uncover her. Still struggling with the bonds of trust between herself and her dearest friend Cyrus, each day brings with it new challenges and information threatening to ruin everything. On top of that, Elara must deal with the fallout of her ever-growing relationship with the mysterious Jax.
The emotional journey of the three central characters really takes center stage in this exciting and otherworldly tale, and that’s what will cement it in such good stead with its teenage audience. Elara has enough typicality of a girl her age to be relatable to her readers, but as she develops emotionally and also faces impossible decisions regarding her new place on the world of Aroonyx, we see a strong young woman with the potential for greatness showing through. That said, she succumbs to the romantic plot of many popular YA stories of the time, but the conclusions J.M. Buckler sets up for that story line are suitably surprising and satisfying. The novel mixes fantasy and science fiction in a way that perhaps not all fans of those genres will enjoy, but for character-driven readers, Stillness of Time provides an excellent, exciting adventure of teenage self discovery, mystery and adventure.
