When a vendor discovers a stowaway in his cart while unloading a vat of wine, he ousts the young boy but the kind inn keeper offers to let him work for his stay. Rendi has run away from his magistrate father's home. His life that he used to have had was nothing like that of the chore boy he has become. Clear Sky, the village he is at, is filled with oddities and unique personalities. It is hot..very hot..and he waits for another cart to come through so that he can leave this place. When a mysterious woman comes to the inn on foot and pays an advance for a month's stay, things start happening. Through her gentle nature and parables, Rendi is shown life in a different perspective.
I have never experienced a book like this one before. It has a believable underlying story that is embellished with interesting people, Chinese fables and raw human nature. There is a bit of peril in one part but the characters are such that you want to turn the pages as fast as you can to see what the main characters will do next. This book is good for the whole family and is one that could be enjoyed together. It would be fantastic to listen to in audio book form on a road trip and then discuss the parts that each person liked best. The story is wholesome, which is so refreshing, and has parts where you cannot help but laugh out loud.
