Richard J. Kendrick brings us clockpunk young adult fantasy in Squawk of the Were-Chicken. Deidre has many 'oops' moments wherein her “thinky” bits have time to catch up. To Deidre, it seems this is all a part of becoming a grown-up. Between her tinkering, going to school, and doing her chores, it has become clear that a monstrous chicken is on the loose in her village. And when the eccentric Aldrovandi arrives, proclaiming himself to be a were-chicken hunter, Deidre knows trouble is coming. With her best friend, Fyfe, by her side, Deidre is convinced that her village is close to collapse if she doesn’t find the truth behind the rumors. Can Deidre do what needs to be done to save her friends and neighbors?

Let author Richard J. Kendrick take you by the hand and lead you into a world of engineering genius. With a sprinkling of magic, the world he created becomes a kingdom of mechanical delights. Characters are vibrant and full of personality. With a plot that thickens inch by inch, you will not want to stop reading. Character growth is evident in our protagonist, which makes this a novel not to miss. Squawk of the Were-Chicken is a fun read and will have you smiling from start to finish. Written in the third-person narrative mostly from the lead character's perspective, this novel is suitable for all ages. This narrative is written in a style inspired by the great Terry Pratchett and leaves me looking forward to more from this author.
