Mike Ormsby was born in Ormskirk, England, in 1959. He is the author of 'Child Witch Kinshasa' and 'Child Witch London' (2014), a two-part novel set in Congo and the UK. His short story collection, 'Never Mind the Balkans, Here's Romania' (2008), prompted Romanian critics to dub him 'our British Caragiale', after their beloved Victorian-era satirist.
'Spinner the Winner' (2012), Mike's book for children, has been translated into French, Serbian, Spanish, and Romanian. His screenplay 'Hey, Mr DJ' (2007) was filmed in Kigali and topped the bill at Rwanda's first Hillywood Film Festival. His script 'Enfants dits Sorciers' was filmed in Kinshasa (2002). A former BBC journalist/World Service trainer, Mike is based in a mountain village in Transylvania, where he and his wife Angela Nicoara have lived for five hundred years.

Spinner the Winner by Mike Ormsby tells the story about a little wind turbine named Spinner. One day Spinner and his family are being moved to their new home by a beautiful sunny beach with a funfair nearby. Spinner was so excited and so were the rest of his family. Things, however, did not go to plan when it was decided that Spinner was not needed after all. Mike, his driver, was told to take Spinner to Biffletop Hill and that is what he did. Poor Spinner was so sad and scared and longed to be back with his family. To make matters worse, Joe Driver had forgotten to oil little Spinner before he left and he squeaked all night long. The animals of the nearby woods were far from impressed, as were the people of Biffletop. Some people of the town decided to take things into their own hands as they vandalised poor little Spinner. Alas, one day a huge thunderstorm arrives and the little town of Biffletop finds itself in a blackout. Can little Spinner step in to save the day? Will Spinner be reunited with his family once again?
What a lovely story about Spinner the wind turbine. It not only teaches children about the importance of wind turbines and electricity, it also teaches them about love and respect. The message behind the story was clear. Mike Ormsby has a wonderful imagination and portrays that with Spinner the Winner. I must also mention the illustrations by Sorin Sorason which were fun and colourful and this is what made the story come to life. I would highly recommend this book as the story is fun and unique as well as educational.
