Specialisms: Autism Perspectives is a work of non-fiction in the parenting and autobiographical writing subgenres, and was penned by author Brad Eck. The work is intended for both the specialized and general reading audiences and contains essential eye-opening information about the realities of raising a child with high functioning autism. Subtitled “Musings from the Family of an Autistic Kid”, this heartfelt volume discusses special moments of a particular family with their son Daniel, and the lessons garnered from each of these memorable instances throughout his life. It is hoped that in sharing these moments, others with special needs children and those from outside the issue can learn, grow, and broaden their horizons.
Author Brad Eck has crafted a heartfelt and beautifully balanced work of non-fiction with plenty of sage advice, laugh-out-loud moments, and emotionally jarring realities to offer readers. I found the juxtaposition between the joys and difficulties of the parenting experience to be a highly interesting and surprising feature, with some particular chapters such as ‘Blue Toilet Paper Running’ and ‘Suicidal Living’ standing out for the contrast and unpredictability of Eck’s family life. In terms of organization, the work was also well-formatted to convey information in a logical manner and allow easy reference to find essential topics again, with memorable titling and charming prose to make the most heartfelt lessons stick. Overall, I would highly recommend Specialisms: Autism Perspectives to fans of non-preachy style parenting books, anyone wishing to learn more about autism, and for parents of special needs children everywhere.
