Space Fandango: Backstabber's Blues by Henry Mosquera takes readers on a magnificent ride that offers the best in sci-fi and fantasy, from the compelling cast of characters to the thrilling plot to the exhilarating adventure. At the start of this great story, the reader gets a powerful image of the spaceship: “It was a ghost ship. Everything about the freighter was phony, from its registration to the identity of its Noctam crew from the planet Revan to its declared payload. So for all intents and purposes, the Cora didn’t exist.” It is an A class 2, C-76B Spacemaster transgalactic freighter that comes crashing through a wormhole onto a remote planet.
In the postwar era, a select group of individuals enters into a deal to buy its cargo. Meet the female warrior with a dubious past, a humorous pilot who attracts trouble, a mechanic, a chef with plans of his own, and a dangerous doctor. They have a long journey to make across a postindependent section of the universe and readers get ready to see them clash against each other, aim for their individual interests, and face unimaginable dangers.
Space Fandango: Backstabber's Blues reads like the space version of Pirates of the Caribbean; it could have well been entitled Pirates of the Acheron. The reader is introduced to very compelling characters — Damien, Dr. Dune, Braal, Scrap Doll — and a fascinating plot. I enjoyed the tension and the exceptional dialogues. From the very beginning of the story, the reader already feels the tension, feels that something about the characters isn’t right, and is eager to find out how they will evolve throughout the story. Henry Mosquera writes so well that I was blown away by the exquisite prose, the intensity of the conflict, and the beautiful setting. This is a story that will transport readers through space into a fascinating world, a real page-turner.
