Sophie Sparrow Wants to Be A Flamingo is an uplifting children's tale by Andrea Hyatt. Sophie is a little sparrow perched on her favorite branch at the Early Bird Summer Camp when her best friend, Sullivan, asks her what bird she would want to be if she could. She answers she would love to be a beautiful flamingo named Pinky. When she learns that Miss Sapphire, who recently moved to the penthouse suite in the tall oak on Maple Lane, can do magic, she convinces Miss Sapphire to turn her into a flamingo. Turned into Pinky, Sophie makes another friend named Felicity, with whom she starts behaving like a flamingo. Sophie soon realizes that she was happier as a sparrow, and, at the first opportunity, gets back into her original form to enjoy chocolate-dipped worms with sprinkles.

Full of humor and heart, Sophie Wants to Be A Flamingo is a colorful picture book children are bound to love. Author Andrea Hyatt has written a hilarious story that follows the adventures of a little sparrow who wishes to be a flamingo. There is a beautiful underlying message in this story about loving who you are. Hyatt's characters are really funny and quirky. Kids will have a wonderful time following Sophie on her adventures. Apart from the humor, I also enjoyed Sophie's friendships with Sullivan and Felicity. Illustrator Nicholas Child brings color to the pages with some lively drawings that perfectly capture the personalities of the characters. In conclusion, this is a delightful picture book that I will highly recommend to young readers.

In Sophie Sparrow Wants to Be a Flamingo, Andrea Hyatt reveals Sophie's wish to be a pink flamingo. She shares her hopes with her friend, Sullivan, and he tells her he wants to be an American bald eagle. Early the next morning, Sophie overhears her mother, aunt, and grandmother discussing a new blue jay in town, Miss Sapphire. They reveal that the bird may have magical abilities, and Sophie is eager to find out the truth behind the rumor. Sophie may get her wish, but if it comes true, she might realize that the change will not make her happy. After Sophie's experience, Sullivan may not want to be an American bald eagle anymore.

Andrea Hyatt captures the essence of innocent wishes in her story and shows that you may not be happy if someone grants your desires. The book conveys a hard lesson, but Hyatt tells it playfully. I can imagine caregivers, educators, and librarians reading this book aloud to children and discussing the moral therein. My young children loved Sophie's enthusiastic spirit and the beautiful colors on every page of Nicholas Child's illustrations. Hyatt delivers some truly hilarious moments as she shows the consequences of Sophie's wish. Each bird had a unique personality that shone through, and readers could easily use different voices to act out the story. Overall, this book is light-hearted and fun, and children who hope to be something they are not may change their minds after they finish reading Sophie Sparrow Wants to Be a Flamingo.
