Sooner Than Tomorrow by Dede Ranahan is the diary of a lifetime of inspiration, understanding, sadness, grief, and desperation as she experienced it in just a year’s time. What started out as the hope of inspiring other generations to leave some valuable wisdom behind for future generations became the terrible experience of losing a child and trying so desperately to hold on to what tomorrow may bring. The courage to write everything experienced as clearly as possible when your child has a mental disorder and inadequate health care coverage, and barely any help waiting for him, is nothing short of heartbreaking and amazing. The sad but true facts of how hard it is to find the help a child needs and knowing he is declining even as he tries so hard to hold on, is disheartening and tragic. Hopefully, Sooner Than Tomorrow will be the wake-up call everyone needs to see that mental illness does not just victimize the sufferer but those around them too and how the health care available is simply not enough.

Sooner Than Tomorrow is a memoir written in the form of a diary by Dede Ranahan. Some of the entries will break your heart while others will have you laughing as Ranahan describes her memories of life with family and friends. The poetry, Facebook posts, the responses and diary entries shared in Sooner Than Tomorrow are well written as they inform the reader of the strength needed and trials of trying to help an adult child as he tries to cope with his mental illness. I recommend Sooner Than Tomorrow to everyone everywhere because Ranahan’s unique inside view of losing a child to an illness after trying time after time to find better help will definitely be a guiding light for anyone who reads these pages. I love how Ranahan chose to share her diary to inspire and help others and I hope that she will continue writing about her experiences, sharing them in more volumes like Sooner Than Tomorrow.
