The life of Ulysses Brooke is a complicated one growing up in the south on a prosperous plantation that used slaves for workers, and Ulysses is set to inherit it. Onlookers would say he had it all and much more. Ulysses, however, disagreed. How could he be a part of something that would own another person and deprive them of their freedom as a human when his own ancestors fought the very same fight during the revolutionary war? Not to mention his only childhood friend on the plantation itself is a slave named Cato. How could he eventually own his best friend? In the historical novel Sons of Liberty by Matthew Speiser, Ulysses sets out to make a change by becoming a rising political star within the governor's own office. Will Ulysses make an impact on the lives of those he wishes to be freed?
Sons of Liberty by Matthew Speiser is a fantastically written novel. The plot is elaborate with many twists and turns to keep readers on their toes throughout the book. Packed with action, adventure, romance, human cruelty (slavery), law enforcement (FBI), politics, war, and much more, it is sure to keep the reader turning the pages to the very end. Each chapter is new and exciting as the author offers a fresh timeline at its start. A reader can expect to dive into the 1800s in one chapter, and the 1970s in the next, eventually ending up in the present day, which makes for an intriguing read. Each character is meticulously created and designed to match their designated timeline in history. While this book is historical fiction, a reader can imagine the story playing into some truth as it relates to actual events learned in history textbooks. I enjoyed this book immensely and was sorry to turn the last page and find the end. I recommend this fantastic novel to any reader who enjoys history, adventure, and learning about the past.
