Sonny’s Talent: Sonny the Wonder Dog, Book 2 is an animal/science fiction storybook for children written by Pamela Foland and illustrated by J.P. Janka Pradeep. Sonny loved living with Pamela and her family. It had been a month since his spaceship had landed in their backyard. He had had to leave Zana, his home planet, since natural resources there had dwindled to starvation levels. Sonny found that assuming the form of an earth dog had both its benefits and drawbacks. Going outside to perform basic functions had taken some getting used to. But he enjoyed the protein-based food Pamela fed him and her two Westies. A major problem was that he needed more intellectual stimulation. Sonny longed to tell Pamela more about himself and his abilities, but he wasn’t sure when the right time to do it would come. He decided to explore some of the books on her shelf while she slept. Later that morning, when Pamela announced that it was her first day in second grade, Sonny got excited and thought he could go with her. Alas, he was left at home, but Sonny was determined to find something to do. Pamela’s books were just too simple for him; maybe that device Pamela’s parents studied might be of interest?
Pamela Foland’s Sonny’s Talent is a marvelous tale of an extraterrestrial who takes on the guise of a dog on earth. Sonny’s experiences are fascinating and fun, giving young readers a chance to see their world through an alien being’s eyes. This book also encourages kids, especially young girls, to explore STEM subjects. Pamela loves science and math, and it is through her arithmetic lessons that Sonny finally gets the opportunity to share some of his knowledge with his best friend. The author also makes use of her story to raise awareness of environmental issues and the things kids can do every day to be part of the solution. J.P. Janka Pradeep’s illustrations make Sonny and Pamela’s two Westies shine! Each panel is brightly colored and works perfectly with the story. Sonny’s Talent: Sonny the Wonder Dog, Book 2 is most highly recommended.
