Song of the Stars by Abby Kane is a dystopian novel set in a future where the Third World War has ravaged Earth. The plot follows 16-year-old slave girl Coral, who lives at Holwin Manor in Estil, a part of the world that used to be known as Europe, with 13 other slaves, including her brother and twin sister. Coral and the other slaves work for a middle-aged couple who treat them terribly. Coral does what she can to stay true to herself despite her dismal existence, which includes forbidden trips outside the manor to watch the sky before dawn. On one of her trips, she has a strange encounter with a starlight that changes her, and she finds out that she is more different than she could ever imagine. What does this mean for Coral and her future at Holwin Manor?
I enjoyed reading Song of the Stars by Abby Kane. I ached for Coral and the rest of the slaves because of all they had to go through at Holwin Manor. Although I thought that Coral could have been a little more caring and open with her siblings, especially her brother, Tristan, I understood that she kept most of her issues to herself to protect them. Despite their bickering, I loved Coral and her siblings’ unity and how they were always there for each other, no matter what. I liked that Coral refused to let her circumstances dim her inner fire, despite how bad things got. The book ended on such a cliffhanger that I’m desperate for the next one in the series to find out what the future holds for Coral.
